Welcome to Creativity at the Core, Module 11 – Assessing Arts Integration in the Era of Common Core (Grades K-6) brought to you by the Los Angeles County Office of Education and the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, Arts Education Collective.

Welcome to the professional learning module Assessing Arts Integration in the Era of Common Core.  We recommend you begin your journey by locating the presentation chart and the content outline in the download section of the module.  This module contains six hours of professional development experience deepening understanding of arts integration assessment and Common Core. The following segments of Assessing Arts Integration in the Era of Common Core, Grades-K-6 can be used to break down your training.  The content Outline is available under Downloads.

Planning your Professional Learning (Content Segments)

As part of your considerations in preparing for the workshop, you will need to think about your audience and their previous knowledge of Common Core Shifts, Arts Integration, Assessing the Arts, and How to Build a Rubric.  The module can be divided into individualized workshop segments to fit the needs of your group.

This module is organized into three segments, each with a different objective.

Segment 1 (45 minutes) Introduction to Common Core Shifts and Arts Integration Definition

In the first segment you will be looking at the Pedagogical Shifts by the Common Core State Standards (handout#1) to reflect that participant understand the depth of knowledge required in instruction.  Also you will be reviewing the definition of arts integration and showing Arts Integration Documentation to illustrate this approach to teaching.

Segment 2 (2 hours) Arts Integration Lesson and Reflection

The full module workshop includes a hands-on arts integration lesson “ Polygon Radial Printmaking.”  This segment will require printmaking tools, paints, polyform board, and paper.  Participants will work on covered printmaking stations each with different colored ink.  This segment may require some additional assistance from another presenter or teaching artist.

Additionally, consider the space available for printmaking and a location to lay all the print so that participants can gather around the products to discuss assessing them.

If you choose to skip the activity you can find images of several Polygon Radial prints you can duplicate to have participants assess with the rubric.

Segment 3 (40 minutes) Defining high quality Formative and Summative

Assessments – including Rubrics
This segment is the nuts and bolts of high quality assessment.  The information is technical and will require you to study the trainer notes in advance to master the content.

Group Rubric Creation (50 minutes)

This activity can be challenging for participants. Table groups will attempt to create a rubric for assessing performance using the radial prints from the Polygon Radial Print making lesson they participated in earlier.  The intent of this activity is to give first hand experience in creating a high quality rubric that matches a lesson

Note: If time does not permit this activity, the handouts contain a model rubric, which can be used to assess polygon prints created by the participants. Refer to Handout #12 for Sample Rubric for Polygon Radial Print Making Lesson.
