CREATE CA – The Arts Help Students Succeed
ARTS ED IS FOUNDATIONAL FOR STUDENT
EQUITY AND SUCCESS
The arts aren’t an extra or “nice to have”. They are critical to students’ success. Research shows that a substantial increase in access to quality arts instruction has a remarkable impact on students’ academic, social, and emotional outcomes. Growing bodies of research show that arts education:
• Reduces stress levels
• Centers student interests
• Promotes equity in schools
• Increases Math & English skills for English Language Learners
• Improves social-emotional health
BUT IN CA, NOT EVERY STUDENT GETS ARTS ED
The latest data from the California Department of Education, Create CA, and the Arts Education Data Project states:
Only 26% of students have access to ALL the arts disciplines required by the state education code.
39% of secondary students participated in arts education courses, as compared to states like Ohio, Wisconsin and New Jersey where 67% or more take arts classes.
The participation rate in schools where the student majority is Asian or White is at 40-47%, compared to 36-38% in Latinx majority schools.
CHANGE IS POSSIBLE THROUGH DIRECT ACTION!
With the new California Arts Standards, we have an opportunity to provide arts learning to California students in dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts as part of a comprehensive curriculum
STEP 1: Look at the data for your school, district, or county at: CaArtsEdData.com.
STEP 2: Use the California Arts Education Data Project’s Roadmap to gather a group of leaders to review the data.
STEP 3: Evaluate the gaps in access to arts education programs.
STEP 4: Work together to create a Strategic Arts Plan at: artsed411.org/artsnow/ArtsPlan.
STEP 5: Use your data and collective voice to support the shift to 100% arts access.
