CCSESA CREATIVITY AT THE CORE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING MODULES
CCSESA Creativity at the Core Module Development
Module 24: Butte & Stanislaus COEs – Teaching Visual Arts in Connection with History/Social Studies, Grades K-12 will outline how Visual Arts teachers can integrate History/Social Science Studies into their practice through the usage of thematic units and is aligned to the California State Standards.
Module 25: San Diego COE – Leveraging English Learner Assets through the Arts, focuses using the Arts as a lens through which we view the importance of cultural and linguistic connections English Learners make to the Arts. New module to be completed in December 2021.

Creative Leadership for Changing Times – A 4-Part Virtual Series
This special series focuses on key aspects of creative leadership and has been designed for arts education leaders from counties, districts, teacher leaders, non-profit arts leaders, and others interested in this topic. The series, presented by CCSESA (California County Superintendents Educational Services Association) will be facilitated by Dr. Gary Waddell and Pat Wayne and will include additional presenters. The series will consist of a blend of information and resources as well as creating space for participants to learn from one another on a variety of key topics. Read more by downloading the flyer.

TCAP Artful Inquiry Intensives – Two Options – Registration is now open!
TCAP’s 2021 – 2022 Artful Inquiry Intensives are offered this year in two virtual formats to meet arts and career arts educators’ needs. Both options begin in December and end in April. Space is limited. TCAP is waiving all registration fees to California’s arts educators.

Designed by arts educators, TCAP’s communities provide an opportunity for TK- through postsecondary dance, media arts, music, theatre, visual arts, and CTE AME educators to connect, collaborate, and stay informed of regional and statewide arts education. State Board Adoption of Arts Instructional Materials
At its meeting on November 3, 2021, the State Board of Education voted to approve instructional materials for the disciplines of visual arts and music. The programs, two for visual arts (grades 1–6 and K–8) and one for music (K–5), align with the 2019 California Arts Standards for Public Schools, Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve.
Three visual arts publishers and two music publishers submitted instructional programs for the 2021 Arts Adoption, which began on May 7, 2021. The State Board’s action formalized the recommendations of the Instructional Materials Reviewers and Content Review Experts who participated in the 2021 Arts Adoption, and approved by the Instructional Quality Commission at its meeting in September. The decisions are posted on the Arts Instructional Materials web page linked here.
While school districts may follow local processes for choosing instructional materials, those adopted by the State Board undergo rigorous review by panels of educators. They offer high-quality materials designed to meet the needs of students with a wide range of abilities and can support quality arts learning in California schools and communities.
School districts are making crucial funding decisions right now and how to use the American Rescue Plan (ARP) and Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSERIII) fund!
Your school leaders require community input about how to allocate these billions of dollars. Let them know that investing in arts education means investing in students’ mental wellbeing, academic achievement, future careers, and civic engagement. Create CA recently released two resources for advocates and school leaders. Create CA has resources for you to navigate and advocate for additional funding for arts education!
Have questions about the ARP ESSER III funds? Use our new resource sheet to help encourage your school leaders to include the arts as a strategy for students’ engagement and mental wellbeing in their ESSER expenditure plans.
Arts education is a proven strategy for students’ Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and our new flyers for Advocates and School Leaders (Spanish versions here) will aid in your advocacy! Use this vital information to ensure that all students have access to the arts.
Take these flyers to your school board, administrators, and school leaders to alert them of arts education’s proven social emotional benefits! Please distribute to anyone you think might be interested and thank you to everyone who provided input into these resources.

REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS – Submitted by the Regional Arts Leads of the CISC/Arts Subcommittee
Region 1 Humboldt County Office of Education – Stacy Young, Regional County Arts Lead
Del Norte The Visual and Performing Arts are joining forces with SEL-driven programs within the Del Norte County Unified School District this late fall. Working in tandem with Sources of Strength, a county-wide peer-mentoring suicide prevention program, the Arts and Creativity Initiative is equipping teenagers and adult mentors with additional practices for strengthening self-awareness and collaboration skills. Additionally the “Why Try” program offered through the counseling services within the Community Day School will be augmented with further connections to Visual and Performing standards. Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness, (non-profit arts association) is seeking to return to a partnership program serving the school district with performing artists. The Wild Rivers Community Foundation will host a county-wide networking session to connect and enlarge the vision for how the arts serve the needs of our communities. Submitted by Julie Smiley, DNCOE
Humboldt was awarded an Arts in Education grant from the Department of Education to work in schools in arts and Social Emotional Learning over 5 years. The ArtSEL grant provides $3.3 M focusing on a whole school approach with the MTSS model. Arts integration is the tier 1 foundation for all students, an Arts therapist is the tier 2 intervention, and Behavior specialists are tier 3. What is unique about the ArtSEL model is that all adults in the school community are trained, compensated for trainings, provided materials, and supported at the worksite.
County teachers are moving forward with using the performing arts strategies learned through the summer institute. Our two teaching artists are traveling around our county doing in person modeling and collaboration. Teachers are working hard to implement the integrated arts strategies learned through the years. Teachers are reflecting on their own teaching practice each month and receiving feedback and follow up conversations. Submitted by Dana Adams, LCOE.
The current VAPA work includes supporting teachers in the Arts and Creativity Initiative with materials, resources, guest artists, and ongoing professional learning. K-5 educators across the county are using theatre arts to support student learning and the development of social and emotional skills. Students are developing a deeper understanding of concepts and ideas across subject areas the collaborative creation of tableaus or ‘living pictures’. Get Arts in the School Program (GASP) is a collaboration between the Arts Council of Mendocino County (ACMC) and the Mendocino County Office of Education (MCOE) connects local artists with students and teachers. Past projects include collaborative murals, use of poems and dance to explore emotions, and an exploration of the ancient process of Japanese marbling Suminagashi. GASP is currently reviewing proposals for arts enrichment to be delivered to K-12 classrooms throughout Mendocino County on a rolling basis. More information may be found at GASP 2021-22. Windsor Unified School District is hosting their iApsire Arts Integration Learning Network beginning November 8th. Participating teachers and administrators will receive PD in arts integration and ongoing coaching in arts integration in their classrooms. The Sonoma County Arts Education Alliance in conjunction with the Sonoma County Office of Education is conducting Arts Education Parent Advocacy Meetups in both English and Spanish to encourage parents to become arts advocates in their schools and districts. In addition, beginning in January AEA will be hosting administrative meet-ups using the Arts=Opportunity cards to increase administrators’ understanding of the importance of equitable access to arts education for all students. The topics include Arts Education and SEL; Portrait of a Graduate and Arts=Opportunity Crosswalk; Arts and LCAP; Title 1 and Title III and the Arts; and The Creative Economy. SCOE was awarded a CCSESA grant to work with rural schools districts to create their own Arts Education Plan using the Sonoma County Arts Education Framework developed through AEA and SCOE. Region 2 Butte County Office of Education – Jennifer Spanger, Regional County Arts Lead
New Funding Available Through Region 2 County Arts Leads for Professional Learning
A modest fund has been established this year to support professional learning in arts education. Each county in Region 2 has been allocated $500 for fees for professional learning workshops or conferences. County Arts Leads will approve the requests in their counties and submit to Butte County Office of Education (the Regional Arts Lead) for payment.
CSU Chico Performances Field Trip Series Available to All Region 2 Schools Each year, more than 80,000 students from across the region have had enriching live arts experiences at Laxson Auditorium at Chico State. Since fall
2020, CSU changed the delivery to a free virtual model with funding
from the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for
the Arts. The new virtual format allows greater access while
ensuring community health and safety. Learn more here.
Online Student Art Shows May Facilitate More Participation
Interest in showcasing student work is up according to Shasta County Arts Lead Trudy Pellizzari. This year double the number of schools want to showcase their students’ visual, performing, and media arts on the Shasta County Office of Education website. The online format was initiated last spring. The 2022 student showcase will launch in February.
Region 3 Sacramento County Office of Education – Dr. L. Steven Winlock, Regional Arts Lead
The SCOE Arts Community of Practice (COP) continues to meet monthly. The COP is comprised of District Art Leads within SCOE’s 13 districts, as well as Sacramento Art Organizations that are involved in Art Education. At the October COP meeting, members gave updates on their programs, learned about the Any Given Child Program and watched a presentation about the Sojourner Truth African Heritage Museum.
The purpose of the COP is not only to bring Art Education to the students, it also is important to support each other as the Districts and Art Organizations strive to accomplish this task. Professional Development is an item that was discussed at the September COP meeting. The SCOE Arts COP in partnership with SCOE, will work on a Professional Development event for teachers in the Spring of 2022.In addition to the SCOE Arts COP, the Region 3 County Art Leads Community of Practice met in October. This Community of Practice will also plan for a Professional Development for teachers in the schools in Region 3.
10.20.21 Region 3 County Arts Leads COP Meeting Details
Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) will be once again hosting the County Poetry Out Loud (POL) Competition this year for high school students. SCOE is partnering with 916 Ink to provide students with poetry coaching. New this year, the Sacramento Educational Cable Consortium (SECC) will go to the schools to film the student’s recitations. SCOE will conduct a live Zoom broadcast to showcase the student’s video recitations, have live interactions with the students, and announce the winner and runner-up. Planning and preparations are underway by the SCOE POL Webinar Team. Schools may register to compete in the county contest linked here.

Vision and focus for 2021-22
Statewide, it is the fundamental belief that instruction aligned with standards-based arts education provides greater opportunities for students—not only to achieve academic goals, but also to drive engagement, connect parents and community, enhance school culture and climate, and ensure equitable arts learning for all. We will work to instill this belief through our work at all levels.
ELD & The Arts
According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, the percentage of public school students in 2018 who were ELLs was 19.4 percent in California. English Language Learners face unique and often overwhelming challenges. The arts provide a universal language and can become a vital educational, communicative, and creative outlet. Alameda County Office of Education will host a Professional Learning workshop, Picture Your Story-An Integrated Approach to Arts and ELD, on November 16th to address these challenges.

This virtual day-long PD will be rich with opportunities to practice creativity and its connections to the vital racial equity and inclusion work we all are leading for in this trying time. This institute is open to all teachers and admin K-12 and will include presenters from San Mateo County Office of Education, Santa Clara County Office of Education, Alameda County Office of Education, Stanford Live, Young Audiences of Northern CA, KQED, and The San Mateo County Arts Commission Office of Arts and Culture as well as a Rockstar line-up for the keynote and a special panel on Student Voice and MORE! The workshops will highlight key topics for student engagement including all 5 arts disciplines, diversity, equity & inclusion, SEL, and Trauma-Informed Practices. We are very excited about this day! Welcome back to a new school year! I hope you were able to get the rest and relaxation you needed to begin the year with a renewed sense of purpose. It will be critical to work together this year and be a support for one another as we navigate the dynamic landscape of our school system. Our new Artspiration website will also have updated guidance for the arts in schools in the Announcements section on the landing page. As we look to a new school year, I wanted to share some updates.
Artspiration Community of Practice
We invite you to join our Artspiration Community of Practice, where we are exploring the integration of the Studio Habits of Mind.
This community of practice is a space of shared leadership, shared learning around arts education.
A brave and safe space to discuss opportunities and challenges as they arise in the current educational landscape.
A place to build community.
2021 Young Artist Showcase
This competition is open to public school students, grades Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, in Santa Clara County.
This year’s artwork theme of “Contact Zones: Places Where We Meet” encourages students to show experiences of places and/or events in which differences meet and interact. Contact zones can be any place where humans are! They include places such as schools or neighborhoods. They include nature with or without animals. They include playgrounds, stores, and places that are community based which may be free or cost money to enter. Contact zones can also be where people share a common language, a culture, or an interest. They are places where you feel like you belong; places where you feel like you don’t belong; places where you want to belong.
Artwork will be accepted in four (4) categories:
- Visual Arts 2D: Present paintings, drawings, prints, works on paper, canvas, wood, cardboard, mixed media, film/analogue photography. Anything on a flat surface.
- Visual Arts 3D: Present sculpture, installation, glass, metal, ceramics, mixed media with materials coming off the paper, etc. Anything three dimensional.
- Media Arts 4D: Produce new media, video, digital photography, illustration, graphic design, photo-shopped images. Anything created on a computer, digital camera, or screen.
- Music, Dance, Theatre Arts: Perform, capture, and submit via YouTube or Vimeo. A submission may be no more than two minutes.
*Note: Artwork can be done alone, with a partner, or with a group of classmates- please include all artists’ names.
Submissions will be accepted November 1, 2021 through February 25, 2022.
Teachers and Teaching Artists are invited to 13th Annual Marion Cilker Conference!
The 13th Annual Marion Cilker Conference for Arts in Education will take place 8:00 am – 1:00 pm on Friday, November 5th and Saturday, November 6, 2021. This year, the conference features two days of professional development addressing the conditions of the new environment of learning and teaching, by curating sessions with a strong focus on integrated learning, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching through the arts while continuing to feature standards-based workshops in the arts and arts integration. In the true spirit of the arts, our workshops continue to exemplify creativity, excellence, and cultural inclusivity.
This conference is co-sponsored by Lurie College of Education at San José State University and the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

From April through August, 2021, a team of educators, administrators, artists, community members and community-based organizations came together to form a Strategic Planning Team to ensure equitable access to the Arts for all The San Benito County October Cardboard Challenge provided an opportunity for students and teachers to launch into STEAM projects for this school year–and everyone had a blast!
High School students at our Alternative Education Schools, Santa Ana and San Andreas, came together to create a Dia De Los Muertos Altar. Rigo Jimenez, from Youth Alliance, supported teachers and students in this collaborative project to honor loved ones.

The San Benito Arts Council is proud to announce the launch of its 2021-2022 Arts in Education Program during the week of October 4th, bringing weekly classes in the visual and performing arts to over 2,800 students throughout San Benito County. Now in its 11th year, the Arts Council’s Arts in Education Program is built on the belief that every child deserves equitable access to the arts, and places professional teaching artists in local classrooms to teach students drawing, painting, multi-media, ukulele, singing and more.

Region 7 – Tulare County Office of Education & Fresno County Superintendent of Schools – Kate Stover & Aaron Bryan, Regional Arts Co-Leads
Increasing Arts Access in Rural Schools
- The Fresno County Superintendent of Schools is providing arts lessons and supplies for schools across Fresno County as part of their initiative to increase arts access for students in rural schools. This project is funded in part by a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
- Schools will receive ten “Emerging Art Student Lessons (EASL)” for grades 3-6, that celebrate artists from around the globe and have students making art in the style of Anish Kapoor, Andrea Pippin, Yayoi Kusama, Rafael López, and many more.
- They will also receive five “Art and the Natural World” lessons that encourage students to discover the beauty all around them. These lessons have students creating using natural and recycled materials as they learn about basket weaving, contour drawing, shadow art, plant litter art, and more.
- On December 3 the Fresno CSS will proudly present a webinar for more than 6,000 Fresno County third graders where they will connect with the first Latina U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, and Rafael López, an award winning and internationally recognized illustrator.
- Justice Sotomayor and Rafael López have collaborated on a wonderful book that encourages children to see the beauty in themselves and others and celebrate that which makes them unique! All of the illustrations and some sketches from the book can be viewed at the Fresno Art Museum in a special exhibition entitled Art of the Word: Celebrating Differences through June 26, 2022. This event has been created to celebrate the exhibition.
- During this event, 3rd graders from across Fresno County will get to ask questions of Justice Sotomayor and Mr. López and hear stories from their lives as they have both gone on to become successful Latinx leaders in their respective fields.
- For the 2nd year, JC Montgomery students participated in Kings County Office of Education’s Stories with Style project. Stories with Style was developed by Consultant Ed Campos and Principal/Consultant Elizabeth Norris. the Educational Services Department under the direction of Assistant Superintendent Joy Santos and Director of Leadership Services LaVonne Chastain and with the support of Kings County Office of Education Superintendent Todd Barlow.
- Students at JCM also recently entered the Unsung competition put on by BreakFree Education. This organization provides educational support to schools serving system impacted youth. The song submitted was named a top five finalist and ended winning SECOND PLACE!

- Mariposa COE is working with the Mariposa County Arts Council to begin implementing the COE’s newly adopted Strategic Arts Education Plan using a grant from the Stuart Foundation secured through CCSESA. Mariposa COE is focusing on the portion of the Strategic Arts Education Plan that installs student-lead public artwork on school campuses. This November, two murals will be installed:
- The first mural has been collaboratively designed by the Mariposa County High School Art Club (with major assistance from Art Department Head/Art Teacher, Pete Bothwell) on the Mariposa County High School Campus.
- The second mural will be installed at Mariposa Elementary School and has been designed by student artists Autumn Stock and Justus Wellcome, two seniors, with an assist from professional mural artist Clay M. River.
- The Mariposa County High School, Mariposa County Arts Council, the Alliance for Community Transformation, and the American Indian Council of Mariposa/Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation applied for a Local Innovation block grant from the Mariposa County Probation Department to develop a Creative Youth Development working group designed to build capacity for all organizations doing creative programming in Mariposa County. If funded, this initiative will embed the opportunity to begin implementing public art and creative placemaking recommendations from the newly adopted Mariposa County Creative Placemaking Strategy and the Mariposa COE’s Strategic Arts Education Plan. Specifically, the following is proposed:
- Establish a CYD working group consisting of experts in the fields of human services, education, indigenous education, art, arts education, creative placemaking, and, most importantly, youth representatives. This group would be tasked with developing rigorous best practices for CYD programming and projects in Mariposa, a multidisciplinary and culturally responsive set of evaluations instrument to measure the impact of CYD programming in Mariposa, processes and relationships needed to integrate human services/academic/workforce development resources in CYD programming across Mariposa, and outreach/communication strategies.
- Pilot three separate CYD programs in Mariposa that will…
- Apply the deliverables created by the CYD working group;
- Demonstrate experience designing and implementing CYD programming and projects in Mariposa and provide the needed work samples for CYD state grants;
- Provide deep, wraparound creative programming for Mariposa’s most vulnerable youth.

- Merced COE held a virtual version of their annual Merced County Education Foundation Gala, which raises funds for our outdoor school at Camp Green Meadows as well as visual and performing arts opportunities. Tulare County Receives 5-year, $1.7 Million US Department of Education Arts Grant
- In Tulare County, arts education is stepping into the spotlight thanks to the support of a new grant from the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE). The Tulare County Office of Education has been awarded a five-year, $1.7 million grant under the USDOE’s Assistance for Arts Education (AAE) program. For this highly competitive grant, the department reviewed 109 applications and funded 27 programs in 15 states. This is TCOE’s first major grant award for arts education.
- AAE grant funds will support TCOE’s new Quality Arts Instruction and Learning (QUAIL) Project. Housed in Educational Resource Services under the direction of Kate Stover, arts staff development and curriculum specialist, the QUAIL Project aims to make an impact on Tulare County. “We are honored to be AAE grantees and are looking forward to expanding all of our arts-related service and support for the students, educators, families, and communities of the county,” Stover said. “This funding will enable us to implement the vision of the Tulare County Arts Master Plan, which we completed in 2018, and to make our arts education dreams a reality.”
- The primary goal of the no-cost QUAIL Project is to provide high-quality, standards-based arts education for all Tulare County students in the five arts disciplines (dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts). Participants in QUAIL will develop and freely share these resources through a rich professional learning series that welcomes all educators – single subject art specialists, general education teachers, administrators, counselors, and community arts educators. In addition to school-year professional learning opportunities, the program will also offer an intensive summer institute training and reactivate the county’s artists in schools program.
- Rooted in improvement science, QUAIL will provide coaching and mentoring for educators, as well as academic and social-emotional supports for students. The arts aid in developing social-emotional wellbeing by providing students with a vehicle for expression, an opportunity to celebrate culture and history, and a way to understand the world they live in.
- The program will also feature an opportunity for local artists and industries to get involved. “Along with all of our support for educators and students, we are expanding our reach deeper into the communities through our existing CreateTC Arts Coalition,” Stover said.

Annual TCOE Student Art Exhibition Virtual Gallery Opens
- TCOE’s annual Student Art Exhibitions will once again be held online this year. Open to students in grades PK-12, the annual exhibitions showcase the county’s gifted young artists who create two- and three-dimensional pieces utilizing a variety of mediums. This year for the first time, the show will also feature digital media – including student produced film and animations. The online gallery will be open December 1 through February 28 and a panel of local artists will judge all entries submitted to the virtual exhibition. Those pieces receiving a Best of Show award will be recognized in a special exhibition in March during Arts Education Month. ARTS + SEL Virtual Workshop Series

Kern County Superintendent of Schools offers 2022 Virtual Cultural Art Showcase – Kern will showcase their local youths’ artwork in a virtual showcase. We will showcase students’ art expressing their culture, environments, and views of their world. This event is designed to focus on their preschool, special education, and K-12 students work in the arts. Santa Barbara County Education Office – Meet Kai! – The Children’s Creative Project led by their new Executive Director, Kai Tepper. Kai comes to Children’s Creative Project from the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation. She received a bachelor’s degree in Art from California State University Channel Islands, emphasizing Studio Art and Art History, where she discovered her love of arts nonprofits. A passionate arts advocate for the last decade, Kai has focused on youth arts initiatives in Santa Barbara County. She is active in many community organizations. For 2021, the Children’s Creative Project joined the “Pianos on State” public art project as its newest member. As a collaborative public arts program, the program seeks to provide impromptu arts experience for people of all ages and backgrounds. This year, we were excited to have several student groups participate in painting a piano with their school. Ventura County is building relationships with local museums to cascade cultural arts opportunities to our local educational agencies. Our newest contributor comes from Erin Brokaw, Executive Director of the Museum of Ventura County. Their upcoming event, Arte Para la Gente: The Collected Works of Margaret Garcia will be on display from Thursday, November 11, 2021 – Spring 2022. Arte Para la Gente explores artist Margaret Garcia’s vast body of work that captures and encapsulates culture, family, and urban life. Over the past four decades, Margaret Garcia has been a leader in the L.A. Chicano Art Movement, championing women, community, and those individuals who are marginalized by society. As a teacher and mentor, Margaret has inspired and encouraged her students to reach into their souls and create art that is authentic to self and reflects their passion for the subjects they are painting. Many of those artists have emerged and found their unique voices in their artwork. Her most recent works, many shown here for the first time, were painted in Ventura County. “My Name, Face and Story” – By integrating culturally sustaining pedagogies and social emotional learning practices, teachers explore and implement the new VAPA framework to support students’ cultural, mental, social, and cognitive health. The second annual summer professional learning event hosted by OCDE, took place on August 1-3, 2021 and our free Community of Practice continued Tuesday, November 2, 2021 with presentations from visual and performing arts teachers from two local school districts.
Poetry Out Loud (POL) – The POL contest encourages high school students to learn about poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. The Orange County Kickoff will be Saturday, Nov. 6th at 10am. Schools and Community Organizations can register by December 15th, 2021 to host regional competitions.
The 2022 OCArts4All Student Art Showcase will have the theme “Portraits of Orange County.” This art show is intended for students in public, private, charter, and home schools. All submissions should originate from school teachers or administrators and be based on school/district programs. Orange County university art gallery directors will review online submissions and recommend artwork for public display. In May, selected 2D artwork will be displayed at Crystal Court in South Coast Plaza and 3D artwork will be displayed at the Cypress College Art Gallery. Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach will then select works for their show which will occur from July through August.
Arts Now Communities – OCDE is partnering with CreateCA and Arts Orange County to bring the Arts Now Communities program to Orange County. This is a great opportunity for community members to partner with their local school districts to support arts education. OCMAA (Orange County Music and Arts Administrators) – Each month OCDE hosts meetings with district arts educational leaders and arts organizations. Our focus this year remains on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and each month a different SEL competency is highlighted and connections are drawn to our new Arts Framework and VAPA Standards. District arts leaders also meet separately to discuss long-term goals and current needs.
Arts Organization Education Departments – Each month OCDE hosts collaborative meetings with arts organization education and community outreach departments to support strategic arts partnerships. This year different colleges and school districts are sending representatives to discuss their needs and relevant and sustainable partnership models with this collaborative group.
Orange County Cappies – OCDE has a long history of partnering with the Orange County Cappies, a writing and awards program that trains high school theater and journalism students to be expert writers, critical thinkers, and leaders. We look forward to the return of this annual event in 2022.

Introduction to Arts Integration Professional Learning – Build an awareness of how arts integration using theatre strategies can activate your curriculum in any content area. This online, asynchronous course developed by the La Jolla Playhouse will guide educators through a deep understanding of the value of standards based arts integration, how to develop an ensemble mindset in the classroom, assessment through the arts, and ways to connect community arts organizations to schools. Course includes example lesson plans, teacher testimony, and resources to guide arts integration into standards based curriculum. This course was designed in collaboration through the Kennedy Center Partners in Education partnership between the La Jolla Playhouse, the Chula Vista Elementary School District, and the San Diego County Office of Education with funding provided by the CCSESA Arts Initiative. This free course has already been taken by twenty five educators and teaching artists and is available upon request using this link.
Arts Instruction and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) – The California Arts Standards and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) professional learning is designed for arts educators, multiple subject teachers, school and district administrators, and teaching artists to deepen their understanding of the connections between the 2019 California Arts Standards for Public Schools and UDL in addition to strategies for implementation. This professional learning is offered by Butte, Fresno, Humboldt, Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Clara, Stanislaus, and Tulare County Offices of Education as part of the collective work of CCSESA Statewide Arts Initiative Creativity at the Core Module 20. Region 10 San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools & Riverside County Office of Education

Region 10 has been active during the fall months as school kicked off. Professional Learning Opportunities have included webinars on Arts Framework Training, (Demystifying the Framework), Filmmaking (iMake Movies, Parts One and Two), Indigenous Children’s Literature and Artmaking (Session 1 of 3) and Poetry and Ethnic Studies.
Riverside County held its inaugural Teen Poet Laureate competition with 74 poets submitting 318 poems. The poems were judged by a panel of 5 professional poets and the 26 finalists were published in a Teen Poet Laureate Chapbook. A reception was held on November 5th at Riverside City Hall, and Katie Xin was named as the Riverside County Teen Poet Laureate for 2021-2022. Copies of the special chapbook that contains all of the finalist’s poems will be placed in a Riverside County library nearest to the poet’s home or school.
Region 11 Los Angeles County Office of Education – Jeannine Flores, Regional Arts Lead
The Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) has partnered with the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture (LADAC) to provide high quality professional development through the Technology Enhanced Arts Learning (TEAL) Project. The goal of TEAL is to increase students’ equitable access to the arts by expanding TK-8 teachers’ capacity to provide culturally relevant, integrated arts instruction which centers on Social Emotional Learning (SEL), for all students.
TEAL provides interactive, experiential professional development focused on integrating culturally inclusive arts and SEL into the teaching of cross-curricular subjects. The Foundational TEAL-SEL PD helps to support those that are new to the TEAL project, while the Advanced TEAL-SEL PD is tailored for those who are returning. Through the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Teaching English Learners through the Arts (TELA) program, TK-6 teachers from our Intensive Districts, received Professional Development with evidence-based strategies for promoting literacy to improve instruction for English Learners through the integration of the Arts into their curriculum.
The Teaching English Learners Through the Arts Project (TELA) held a successful Two-Day Hybrid Leadership Institute to support and provide training specifically for Theater and integrated Visual Arts, Dance and Music disciplines. We came together In-Person and in Zoom for an interactive, experiential training focused on Language Development for EL students.

Media Arts Integration Professional Learning Series
Media Arts is the newest artform recognized in the California Arts Standards. There are Media Arts standards for PK through grade 12. But where is a teacher to start? In this series, teachers will gain confidence and skills to integrate media arts into their classroom. Standards for the Arts, English Language Development, and the Common Core will be foundational to the learning.
New Session Added! Media Literacy with Scott Moss
Explore how to address media literacy skills for elementary students. By expanding the traditional notions of literacy through media analysis and production, we provide students opportunities to acquire vital skills, such as critical thinking, communication, creativity, empathy, and collaboration. This session will model both the analysis and production aspects of media literacy for elementary age students.
Scott Moss has worked in K-12 education for 30 years and in higher education for 20 years. Scott currently works as an Instructional Technology Outreach Coordinator at the Los Angeles County Office of Education. He’s earned the Time Warner National Teacher and the Classroom of the Future Foundation’s Innovative Educator Awards. Scott presents at local, state, and international conferences.

Counties on the Move – Publication for Download
Knowing that the visual and performing arts contribute to effective schools, the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) Arts Initiative continues to build capacity for arts education at the national, state, region, county, and local levels. As part of this effort, we continue to publicize examples of county superintendents’ support for arts education in an engaging informational booklet entitled Counties on the Move Toward Arts Education for All Students. This CCSESA publication includes submissions from counties across California and provides a snapshot of the wide variety of arts education projects, programs, planning strategies, and collaborations provided by county offices of education.
CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION STEERING COMMITTEE (CISC) GOALS
The goals of the Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee (CISC) are to provide leadership and high-quality services to school districts by:
- Supporting academic achievement and continuous improvement, with a focus on closing the achievement gap:
Strengthen county office of education capacity to support districts, schools, and county programs in fully implementing Common Core State Standards and preparing for SBAC annual state assessments in order to
improve student achievement, with particular focus on underserved student populations, English learners, early learning, and college and career readiness.
- Developing collaborative leadership approaches that are future‐focused, and responsive to changing conditions: Take steps to build strong working relationships with CDE and state leaders, with CCSESA Steering Committees, COE superintendents, and leaders in districts; seek collaborative approaches that support districts in their improvement efforts while continually building CISC’s internal leadership capacity.

Provide leadership that supports California in developing and implementing plans to address federal initiatives, including Common Core Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, and ESSA.
- Providing leadership for California initiatives impacting instruction and student achievement:
Work in collaboration with other key stakeholders and CCSESA steering committees to provide leadership in the areas of key statewide initiatives such as implementation of the Local Control Funding Formula, Local Control Accountability Plans, the Quality Schooling Framework, and other statewide initiatives.
- Providing leadership for technology‐based curriculum and instruction approaches:
Work in coordination with other key stakeholders and CCSESA steering committees to provide leadership in areas related to technology and
innovation including virtual schools and courses, online professional development resources and tools, electronic textbooks, and other technology-based areas that influence and accelerate teaching and learning.
