Rural Arts Education Think Tank @ California Department of Education
Dec 6 @ 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

In an effort to expand arts learning access in rural communities statewide, we hope to gather educators, arts leaders, and community members from cross California to join in a discussion to further understand both the challenges and opportunities that exist in rural communities across the state.

What will we do in the Think Tank?

Explore how data can inform level of access in our rural
communities;

Hear about current research and implications for our field;

Learn about how some rural communities are developing
innovative practices to increase arts learning opportunities for pre-K through 12 students;

Share strategies to build support for arts learning both in discrete and integrated learning;

Engage in a public will campaign that is taking place in California; and

Collaborate with other educational leaders from across California.

Your Voice is Important

We hope that you will participate and share your insights and understandings as we explore together how to deepen and expand arts education for our students. How can we work together to make change?

Questions? Contact Jessie Kroll-Yoas at jyoas@ccsesa.org

“A review of the literature reveals several barriers to increasing access to arts education in rural areas,  including  lack of economic opportunity,  geographic distance, recruitment and retention of  teachers and administrators, lack of funding for arts education, policies that do not support the arts, limited collection and analysis of data, and lack of representation on creative economy initiatives.”

– Dr. Lisa Donovan, researcher, professor, and author (Leveraging Change, Increasing Access to Arts Education in Rural Communities)

Many communities across California are spotlighting the importance of the dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts education for all students.  As we celebrate the benefits and value the arts bring to our schools and communities, we want to ensure that all students have access to quality arts learning in their schools.
